Our history
Lower Hill Farm has been producing turkeys since 1946 and we are proud to be able to say that some of our very first customers and their families are still with us today!
We take great pride in producing these beautiful turkeys and have adapted the very finest farming methods, including allowing the birds to slowly mature for up to six months. Our philosophy has always been to produce happy, healthy and flavourful turkeys to ensure our customers can enjoy a really wonderful Christmas treat.
We’ve created a wonderful environment for our turkeys where they can roam freely with access to lush grass, with a deep, clean littered straw barn always available for nighttime and those days when the weather is less favourable — however, we’ve found that even heavy snow flurries aren’t enough to dissuade our adventurous turkeys from staying outside to enjoy the fun!
Our philosophy
As proud suppliers of chickens for Marks and Spencer, we know how important it is to properly look after our livestock. From employing regenerative agriculture principles across the farm to offering a free range, enriching environment, we’re able to ensure the best quality products — happy, healthy animals are proven to produce a better texture and flavour than factory farmed alternatives.
Our turkeys at Lower Hill are raised to high welfare standards and fed on a diet based on locally grown cereals, vegetable protein and oats, free from additives, drugs or growth promoters. This tailored diet and the slower maturing process allows a natural fat layer to appear under the skin, giving our turkeys their wonderful, classic flavour.
Essentially, we continue to dry hand pluck our turkeys and this timely tradition is a key part of our high standards. In the same way, the turkeys are then individually hung for up to 14 days to allow a richer, more succulent flavour to develop into the wonderfully tenderised meat. Although these old fashioned methods are slower and more labour intensive, we believe this dedication to care and attention plays an integral part in producing superior quality turkeys — and we’re very proud of them!
